A holster is an inherent part of a pistol. Without it, the firearm cannot be carried; at most, it can lie in a nightstand or a safe.
Kydex holsters are the exact opposite of leather holsters in terms of material origin and functionality. For owners of classic metal models, they are often too hard and aesthetically uninteresting. However, for competitions, modern concealed carry, or service weapons, Kydex is the absolute number one.
We will now look at what you can expect from Kydex holsters, where they excel, and if they also have any weaknesses.
Kydex: a highly functional material
Kydex is an alloy originally intended for aircraft interiors. Thanks to its properties, it has become a popular material for the production of holsters for pistols and knives. In our shop, kydex holsters are mainly purchased by sports shooters and service weapon holders.
Advantages:
-
Constant shape: It will not stretch, loosen, or compress. The holster remains open, and you can easily return the pistol to it with one hand.
-
Safety: The firearm is held firmly inside. You will recognize the correct seating by the characteristic "click" heard after insertion.
-
Fast draw: Kydex has only minimal resistance and does not stick to the firearm like leather. You only have to overcome the resistance in the first moment for the holster to expand at the point where it embraces the trigger guard; after that, it comes out completely smoothly. You will appreciate this in situations where seconds count.
-
Easy maintenance: Or rather, practically zero. Simply wipe the holster with a damp cloth.
-
"Indestructibility": The material resists sun, sweat, frost, oil, and most chemicals.
Disadvantages:
-
Discomfort: Hard plastic can press against you, especially when sitting and with larger firearms. The discomfort is more prominent with IWB holsters, though it also depends on your build and physical proportions.
-
Firearm wear: Abrasion may occur in places where the firearm rubs against the holster (on the trigger guard and on the edges of the slide). This is not such a big deal for sports firearms, but you likely won't appreciate this patina on collector's pieces.
Our tip: Holsters from RH Holsters have a very smooth finish inside, which minimizes this issue.
Kydex as the king of fast drawing
Kydex holsters are more suitable for training at the shooting range, competitions, or for service purposes. Thanks to their rigidity and the possibility of a fast draw, they better fulfill their purpose in situations where seconds count.
Conversely, if you carry a firearm as an accessory, stylish
leather holsters might appeal to you more. These are also more comfortable for concealed carry inside the waistband (IWB), especially if you have them on you all day.
Of course, it is not always so straightforward and depends on your personal preferences.
If you carry a firearm concealed in a leather holster for self-defense, it is good to train with this holster at the shooting range as well. Only then will you gain the confidence needed in case you have to use it in the field.
Model as a crucial crossroad
Holsters are manufactured specifically for each model according to a precise mold so that the pistols fit into them perfectly. For better clarity, you will find our holsters divided by model:
In the individual categories according to models, you will find both kydex and
leather holsters together.
Holsters for standard models
Only factory versions of the models, or models equipped with a red dot, fit into the holsters in our offer. If you equip your pistol with a tactical light, frame mount, or thumb rest, it changes its geometry so significantly that it will not fit into a standard holster, and you will need a custom-made one.
