One option for installing a riflescope on a firearm is using mounting rings for a Picatinny rail. To use them, you cannot do without the Picatinny rail itself.
In this category, you will find Picatinny rails for the CZ 457, CZ 600, as well as other rails for older CZ rimfire rifles and rifles.
What are the advantages of Picatinny rings?
Mounting rings for a Picatinny rail come in many variants, allowing you to choose a custom-tailored solution. The advantages include:
versatility = you can transfer Picatinny rings to any firearm with a Picatinny interface
various mounting heights
option to choose a quick-detach (QD) mechanism
various inclinations (MOA)
choice between one-piece mounts or two separate rings
Picatinny rail: Yes or no?
Some rifles come with a Picatinny rail straight from the factory. If you purchased such a rifle, you are surely well aware of its benefits. However, you might have realized only over time that you would welcome a Picatinny rail on your firearm. Fortunately, it can be retrofitted onto a large number of rifles; you just need to find the corresponding rail for your specific model.
An exception is made for certain older CZ models (for example, older CZ rimfire rifles, including CZ Brno, CZ 452, and others) for which a Picatinny rail is not manufactured. The rail from newer models cannot be used because the ejection port on older and newer models is located in a slightly different position. The rail would thus obstruct the ejection of cartridge cases. This situation is resolved by mounting the riflescope using dovetail rings, as the dovetail remains identical on both older and newer models.
When to get a Picatinny rail
If you are currently deciding whether or not to add a Picatinny rail to your rifle, think primarily about how you plan to use the firearm. A Picatinny rail is best utilized by shooters who:
want quick-detach (QD) accessories for fast and convenient optics changes or for moving a riflescope to another firearm
own multiple firearms
are looking for maximum variability
want additional tactical accessories
shoot at longer distances
need to address inclination (MOA rails)
enjoy the versatility of the mounting system and like upgrading their firearm with various accessories
When considering whether to acquire a Picatinny rail, consider the following factors:
The Picatinny rail increases the height of the riflescope axis above the barrel.
A more complex mechanism naturally carries the risk of a joint loosening, resulting in a loss of zero.
Higher overall weight of the entire system.
First and foremost, consider whether a Picatinny rail will bring you any real benefit. If you do not use additional optics or tactical accessories, are not looking for further variability, and simply want to install a riflescope and not worry about it further, dovetail mounts might suit you better.
What is a Picatinny rail made of?
Rails are manufactured from either aluminum or steel.
Aluminum rails have a lower weight, but be careful during installation—ensure you do not exceed the recommended tightening torque (1 Nm). As a more brittle material, aluminum is more prone to cracking.
Steel rails can handle a higher tightening torque (2–2.5 Nm). Their relative disadvantage is higher weight and tighter tolerances—with steel rails, it is sometimes necessary to use a bit more force during installation.
Can I install a Picatinny rail myself?
Yes, you can manage the installation of a Picatinny rail yourself at home. You will need the correct Allen or Torx key and a torque wrench. The task will take you about fifteen minutes.
